How is Rehabilitation Performed in Facial Paralysis?

We have facial muscles and the nerves that enable these muscles to move are known as facial nerves. The facial nerve is evenly distributed on our face. The task of this nerve generally provides all kinds of facial expressions and movements.

For example, many facial nerves are controlled by facial nerves, from laughing to frown and even crying, lip and eye movements. In some cases, the facial nerve cannot fulfill its task and the face loses its mobility. In medicine, this condition is called facial paralysis and has various treatments. It varies according to the treatments and the patient's condition.

What are the Causes of Facial Paralysis?

Sometimes no cause of facial paralysis can be found and can occur out of nowhere. At the same time, sudden paralysis, which we call stroke, is a serious problem. This problem, which usually comes from the central nervous system, can also affect the face area. A cerebral hemorrhage, concussion, or some cases of brain tumors can also cause facial paralysis. Even advanced middle ear infections and severe blows to the face are known to cause facial paralysis.

It is one of the causes of facial paralysis in some birth-related traumas. Facial paralysis can sometimes present with slurred speech or decreased tears. In some cases, it may appear as eye twitching, and sometimes there may be a complete disappearance of facial expressions. There are two types of facial paralysis. Central or peripheral facial paralysis In the case of central facial paralysis, there is damage to the brain part. In peripheral facial paralysis, it means that the main nerve cells of the facial muscles are damaged.

Facial Paralysis Rehabilitation Treatment

Of course, there are many of you who wonder how rehabilitation can be done in facial paralysis. Rehabilitation must be applied during the treatment process in patients with facial paralysis. Facial muscle exercises are performed and the exercises to be applied are recommended to the patient. These exercises, which are done with certain repetitions, are also supported by massage. Thermal therapy is also applied.

Thermal therapy is a method applied with a hot water bag and is based on the principle of increasing blood flow in the face area. During rehabilitation, these procedures must be performed by knowledgeable and trained people. The given exercises are repeated at least 3 times a day.
