Torticollis Rehabilitation
Torticollis Rehabilitation is a method used in the treatment of torticollis. Torticollis is also known as neck curvature. Generally, in this disease, the movement of the neck to the right and left is restricted. The neck curves to the side of the contracted muscle, and the chin bends to the other side. Torticollis seen in childhood usually happens at the time of birth.
Although it can be diagnosed in infancy, it can usually be related to the tumor. When it is congenital, it is thought to be caused by compression in the mother's womb. Torticollis may also be seen in some neurological patients. It has also been observed that some internal organ diseases are caused by it. This disease, which is seen in approximately one in two hundred and fifty births, can reach serious dimensions if not treated. There may be flattening on the head or conditions such as facial reduction.
What is the Diagnosis Stage of Torticollis?
Before trying the Torticollis Rehabilitation treatment method, an accurate and timely diagnosis should be made. Especially for early diagnosis, appropriate tests should be done in infancy. Your doctor may first perform an observational examination, which is actually sufficient on its own. Of course, some radiological tests may also be requested. The most common is ultrasound. In particular, the SCM muscle should be examined.
MRI can be requested to control the muscles. If a more detailed examination is requested, the most appropriate EMG is to be performed. In addition, the patient's neurological history should be investigated. It is recommended to examine the patient's head and neck movements as well as spinal movements, vision and hearing senses.
How is Torticollis Treated?
One of the applied treatment methods is to apply Torticollis Rehabilitation. First of all, the family is informed about this. Then, necessary physical therapy and rehabilitation methods are applied. Exercises are very important during this treatment period. The baby must be placed in a position where he can turn his neck against sound stimuli. The neck of the baby should be especially supported during carrying and breastfeeding.
Joint opening and stretching exercises are repeated at least 5 times a day with the movements determined by the physical therapist. In general, these movements are in the form of bending the neck forward, backward, right and left. Neck in each position for about 10 sec. is kept. It is important that all the baby's needs are met and calm during the exercises. The neck should be carefully supported with each movement.
